Welcome to my first official Website for some cute seals.
The Main idea for this website is to explore the beauty of what makes a harp seal special to me compared to other species of seals, you probably have already seen those cute videos of harp seals greeting people, or of older seals with people who take care of them until adulthood. Those videos aren't the only things however, the harp seal as a whole is a species of seals mainly native to the North Atlantic and Artic Oceans, with over 7 million in its population. But thats only the beginning...
Listed as the "Pagophilus groenlandicus", it stands at about 5.25 to about 6.25 feet, coming a around 400 pounds. Its diet consists mainly as a carnivore for meat and smaller animals, which with all this in mind it can live for up to 20 years!
During mating season, harp seals would cuddle together in large groups, however, because of their young, they tend to stick together to help a baby harp seal as their young do not have the protective fat that protects them from the cold climate like adult harp seals.
As mentioned previously, they are carnivores. Their main sources of meat however come from directly under the cold ice underwater, which they would have to dive underwater to find. The longest ever recorded of a harp seal lasting underwater is at least up to 16 minutes while they hunt for fish, krill, and crustaceans!
Harp seals is one of my personal favorite sea animals primarily for how amazing they are for their simplicity but also for the capabilities to adapt to their climate ever since birth. They give us a wider idea of how mammals can adapt even in colder conditions opposite to our own. In this case, the cold. But they are also super cute and I love them a lot.
